John Iannamorelli receives 2023 AMOS Best Paper Award

SCOPE authors John Iannamorelli and Keith LeGrand received the Best Paper Award at the 2023  Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies (AMOS) Conference. Their submission, titled “Adaptive Filtering for Multi-Sensor Maneuvering Cislunar Space Object Tracking,” presented a novel probabilistic filter capable of tracking a noncooperative cislunar space object in an Artemis-I inspired trajectory using only passive angles measurements. The AMOS conference is considered to be the top scientific conference in the field of space situational awareness (SSA)/space domain awareness (SDA) and hosted over 1,300 participants this year.

John Iannamorelli joins SCOPE

The SCOPE lab welcomes its newest member, John Iannamorelli. 

John graduated from Purdue University in 2022 with a degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering with a specialization in Astrodynamics and Space Applications. In his undergraduate career, he conducted research in the field of Computational Particle Mechanics under Prof. Marcial Gonzalez in an effort to characterize the explosive tendencies of energetic materials under compaction. John is currently a master’s student in the school of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue where he will continue to focus on Astrodynamics and Space Applications. Upon obtaining his master’s degree, John hopes to continue his education and obtain his Ph.D.

Aneesh Khilnani joins SCOPE

The SCOPE lab welcomes its newest member, Aneesh Khilnani. 

Aneesh is a master’s student in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, specializing in Astrodynamics and Space Applications. He completed his undergraduate education at Purdue University in Spring 2022 with degrees in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering and Applied Mathematics. As an undergraduate, Aneesh completed internships at ATA Engineering, NASA Langley Research Center, and The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory; these work experiences were concentrated in structural dynamics, flight dynamics, and controls. Additionally, he was a researcher for the Automation and Optimization Laboratory under Prof. Ran Dai, where he developed an assessed the attitude dynamics of a quadcopter simulating a fuel-optimal powered descent on Mars. After completion of his MSAAE degree, Aneesh hopes to continue towards the Ph.D. program.

Keith LeGrand joins Purdue University Faculty

Keith LeGrand is joining the Purdue University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. Hired as part of Purdue’s Cislunar Space Initiative, Prof. LeGrand and his lab will work to advance research in cislunar space domain awareness (SDA) and spacecraft navigation. Located in West Lafayette, Indiana, the Purdue University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics ranks #4 and #5 for its undergraduate and graduate programs, respectively, according to the 2022 U.S. News and World Report.

Keith LeGrand named NDSEG Fellow

Keith LeGrand was selected for the NDSEG Fellowship. The DoD NDSEG Fellowship Program, established in 1989 by direction of Congress and sponsored by the Army, Navy, and Air Force, serves as a means of increasing the number of United States citizens trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance.
